"May 9, 2017 — Hello friends,

We are now almost 400,000 people -- and all of us demand immediate action and investigation into the mass murder and torture of gay men in Chechnya. We are united, strong and we will stop this!

We are told repeatedly Chechnya has never seen so much pressure before. And we know that we can do a lot more. So big thank you for standing with us.

Now, important updates:

- Last Friday Russian President Vladimir Putin backed an inquiry into a reported crackdown on gay people in the republic of Chechnya, in the North Caucasus. He said he would personally ask the prosecutor general and the interior minister to check the reports. This happened thanks to all your efforts and efforts of activists in Russia and abroad.

- Earlier last week German Chancellor Angela Merkel this week urged the Russian authorities to help protect gay rights. Separately, Foreign Ministers of UK, Netherlands, Sweden and France called on Putin to react.

- Chechen officials still deny gay people even exist in the republic, amid reports of arrests and torture.

We have already pushed hard the authorities to account. This is why it is so important to continue to work in two directions at the same time:

1 - Continue to push the Russian authorities to respond and react
2 - To ensure that victims and those who are in danger in Chechnya have an opportunity to escape.

1 - Please continue to spread the word about our campaign. We are doing our best to reach out to more media, elevate the voices of the victims and find new ways to pressure Putin and Kadyrov. We are almost 400,000 people -- it's huge -- imagine if we were 1 MILLION? Please invite your friend to sign this petition! Please copy this petition link in your social media: www.change.org/chechnya100

2 - Please continue to reach out to your Foreign Ministry in your country. It is VERY important that these Chechen men get visas, because they need to leave the country. As far as we know only few managed to leave so far.
Find your Foreign Ministry here: https://www.usip.org/publications/2008/03/foreign-affairs-ministries-web, go to their contact page and in informal way ask them to make sure they give free and easy visas to these men.

Thank you so much,
we are strong and together!!
Igor, Nikita, Artem"

"May 11, 2017 — Dear friends,

We have urgent and important news! Today we were going to deliver all of the nearly 400.000 signatures we’ve collected together to the Prosecutor General’s Office in Moscow. We intended to demand a full-scale investigation of the cases of tortures and murders of LGBT people in Chechnya. The delivery was scheduled to take place at 11 a.m. and was organised together with the Russian LGBT Network.

Unfortunately, had we barely left the car with all the boxes, we got immediately detained by the police!

We are writing this update for you from a police van in which we are being kept. They are planning on taking us to the Tverskoy police station. Here’s a picture from inside a Russian police vehicle, used for transporting prisoners.

Dear friends, we are immensely grateful for your support and will keep you updated. Now, we are asking you to spread the information about our arrest as wide as you can! Please, use your social networks or communicate this info to journalists you know. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT.

We are nearly 400.000 — this is a huge power to be reckoned with! Let’s show what it’s capable of!

Thank you very much from the bottom of our hearts,
Nikita Safronov, Alexandra Alekseyeva, Marina Dedales, Yury Guaiana and Valentina Dekhtyarenko"

BREAKING: Chechnya's President says he’ll wipe out the area's gay population in just two weeks. Thousands of Avaazers are rushing to power a rescue plan - here's another chance to join them:

Dear friends,

Activists fighting this brutal crackdown need more of our help, and fast.

The underground rescue network they’ve thrown together is no match for the roving government thugs who round up "suspected homosexuals" and drag them to black sites to be tortured -- and in some cases killed unless they reveal the names of their friends and lovers.

This is how we save lives: funding for safe houses, transportation, and legal representation, plus media coverage and campaigns against horrific laws.

Every day, more people face being rounded up -- let's show them the world won’t stand by while they are wiped out:

Over 1 million of us have already called on Russia's leaders to intervene, and we’ve helped get heads of state and the global media to take our message directly to President Putin. But investigators just found four more secret prisons. For the moment, gay men’s only hope is fellow citizens prepared to put their own lives at risk to spirit them to safety.

We can help take this incredible work to the next level, fast. Together we could:

  • fund safe houses where gay people can hide from authorities
  • provide cars and lawyers to help people flee the country
  • send investigative journalists to expose anti-gay abuse and violence
  • back local activists wherever these attacks take place to win the basic right to love whoever they choose, and ramp up international pressure on their government.

and more…

We know what we do works.

When this same kind of attack was launched in Uganda, Avaaz successfully established secure housing, security training and support for a rescue network, and advocated to water down a brutal gay death penalty law -- saving countless lives.

Assaults on gay communities are happening everywhere, and so is the resistance.

From a network of support and counselling in the Middle East to a protection force for LGBT people in South Africa -- we can make Chechnya the beginning of a global response to gay hate with enough funds from all of us. Let’s show Chechnya and gay communities everywhere that the world won’t let them be silently wiped out:

The struggle to make gay rights human rights everywhere is a long one, but it’s a struggle that is essential to our shared humanity -- almost 10% of the human population lives and loves in fear! This is our chance to chip away at that fear and replace it with the freedom to love openly.

With determination and gratitude for this amazing community,

Emma, Danny, Sarah, Spyro, Risalat and the whole Avaaz team

P.S. When Uganda first tried to pass a law giving the death penalty for being gay, it seemed hopeless.

With a spark from our movement, the resistance inside Uganda survived

government attack, beat back the law, took the American religious leader who promoted the law to court and became an international fighting force for LGBT rights. This is the kind of story we can tell again and again together!

Join in here.

Note: The image featured in this campaign is from elsewhere in Russia, where the Russian LGBT Network is fighting hard for gay rights.

"Yesterday our trial took place in Moscow. As you know, we were detained on May 11 in our attempt to deliver all your signatures to the General Prosecutor's Office and demand investigation into the persecution of gays in Chechnya.

As a verdict, two of us received a fine of 10,000 rubles ($176), hearings for the other two people were postponed to June 21. The Court will be calling on the police officers who carried out the detention as witnesses."
